Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was an activist and a former president of South Africa. He spearheaded the anti-apartheid movement in his country in protest against the oppressive rule of the minority White community. He was a member of African National Congress from nineteen forty. He was an advocate of both peaceful protests and armed resistance. His leadership in these movements landed him in jail where he stayed for twenty seven long years. Once released, he became the first Black president of South Africa. After retiring from politics in nineteen ninety nine, he remained an activist for social equality and human rights.
