Dashrath Manjhi was a poor labourer born in Gehlour village near Gaya in Bihar. He was born in the year 1934. When he was young, he ran away from his home in Gehlour village to work in the coal mines of Dhanbad. Later he came back to his village and married Phalguni Devi. While bringing him lunch, crossing Gehlour village, Phalguni Devi slipped and injured herself badly. Due to the delay it took to take her to a medical facility, she finally succumbed to her injuries. This affected Dashrath Manjhi deeply. On that very night, he decided to carve a path through that hillock so that people may have easy access to the township and the medical facilities that lay on the other side.
